Sam Houston
ALLEN was born on October 14, 1839 in Moscow, Fayette County, Tennessee, the
eldest child of Edmund Lilly ALLEN and Rebecca Magdalene SMITH. The family
lived in the 12th Civil District of Fayette County at the time the 1850
census was recorded, when Sam was an 11-year-old schoolboy.
Sam ALLEN
enlisted for military service on May 28, 1861, at Jackson, Tennessee, and
was elected Sergeant on May 1, 1862. He served as a Sergeant in the 13th Tennessee
Infantry, Co. E, CSA during the Civil War, sustaining a wound at the Battle
of Shiloh that would plague him for the rest of his life.
