of Gifts of Slaves Rockingham County, North Carolina Aril 2, 1789 No. 577 State of North Carolina Rockingham County To all Christian people to whom this present writing shall come, I Sarah May of the State and County aforesaid send greeting in our God everlasting. Know ye that I the said Sarah May for and in consideration of the love and good will and affection which I have to and bear towards my children to wit, William May, Robert May, Reuben May, Sarah May, Caswell May, Molly May and Thomas May of the County of Buckingham in the State of Virginia, have given granted and by these presents do freely clearly and absolutely give and grant the said William may, Robert May, Reuben May, Sarah May, Caswell May, Molly May and Thomas May, them their heirs executors, a certain negro wench of the name of Suck*, she and her increase, to be equally divided between the above named children and their legal representatives, these negroes only being lent to me by my Father in his lifetime and sold to pay Peter May's debts contrary to law - To have and to hold the said negro Suck and her increase them their heirs executors etc. from henceforth as their good forever, absolutely without any ...[illegible]... of condition as I the said Sarah May have absolutely and of my own accord... [illegible]...put in further testimony, in witness whereof I put my hand and f ix my seal this twenty fifth day of March, 1789.
