(1922) Wish You Were Here: a Tour of America's Great Hotels During the Golden Age of the Picture Post Card
Yes, times were different back
then....
Can you imagine seeing your
name in the local paper the morning after you'd checked into a hotel? That would
certainly cramp some congressional (and ex-presidential) style, wouldn't it?
But this was a common practice,
and I've seen such guest lists in newspapers from Dallas to Philadelphia, the
Carolinas to California.
Hotel guest lists are
yet another good
reason to not limit your research to strictly the area where your ancestor
lived!
The guest's home state is
usually mentioned, or even their hometown. You'll see an interesting pattern as
I add more of these lists: some cities' hotels will have a greater proportion of
guests from other states, and from greater distances.
Memphis is one example,
probably because of its location on the Mississippi River, a major thoroughfare.
To put it in more modern terms, think of it as being on a handy exit on the interstate highway of its day, or as
a long layover in Atlanta!
You might want to browse through
these lists from time to time if your ancestor was known to be a person whose
occupation required a certain amount of travel. When I get behind on indexing
names, I'm usually behind on articles that had long lists of names....like
these!
This section will include links
to all the hotel guest lists that I add to the site, updated as I add
each new list.

Postcards .
