Official Program. Pacific Fleet Festival: Welcoming the Officers and Men to the Shores of California
From the seller: "Book Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by With B&W photos..
(illustrator). First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall. Paperback. Very Good.
First Edition. Rare. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall. 4to [ca.20]pp VG in wraps (tears
at spine tips, foxing to cover, edge wear). VG photo (some light soiling & spots
to image and reverse). Program of the Pacific Fleet Festival including original
black & white signed photograph of the Navy Destroyer U. S. S. Yarnell,
(DD143), a 4-stacker. The sterns of two other Destroyers can also be seen,
(DD75) the Wickes and (DD77) the Woolsey. Several men can also be seen sitting
on the rear decks of the Wickes and Yarnell. In the background beyond the dock
can be seen a few buildings and warehouses. The Yarnell was commanded by
William F. Halsey when she was originally commissioned in 1918 and also during
the fleet festival, when the photo was taken. Halsey would later become famous
for his successes in WWII where he directed many battles against the Japanese in
the Marshall and Gilbert Islands and at Guadalcanal among others. The Japanese
would later sign an official surrender on board Halsey's flag ship the Missouri.
It is interesting to note that Halsey became commander of the Wickes a year or
so after the festival and later stated in his memoirs that the Wickes was "the
best ship I ever commanded; she was also the smartest and cleanest." Halsey was
later given the five-star rank of fleet admiral, one of only five men to hold
this position. Some further distinction for the Wickes and the Woolsey is that
they were two of the four ships assigned to escort President Woodrow Wilson
during his voyage to France in 1919 where he attended the Versailles Peace
Conference. The name Ray Miller is written on the rear of the photo and also in
the program next to the Yarnell's listing, and stating that it was "Ray's
Boat". Rare."
