WILKERSON Family Members Arrive
To be Mrs. CARSON, Who is Very Ill

The Southwest American

Fort Smith, Arkansas

October 9, 1918

NOTE: Mrs. CARSON's pneumonia probably started off as the flu, since this is reported in the midst of the 1918 "Spanish flu" epidemic, and many other articles from this newspaper issue report people sick with the flu.

A quick search over at Ancestry.com gave me a John Q. CARSON in the 1920 United States Federal Census, living in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  While I wouldn't draw any definite conclusions as to why, the family includes John Q. CARSON as head of household, three sons and a daughter. No wife is listed. I cannot read the handwriting in the "marital status" column, so I don't know if he's listed as "widowed," but he's clearly not listed as "single."
