Always a Virginian: the Story of the Colorful LANGHORNEs and Their Kin
Five Sisters: The LANGHORNE Sisters of Virginia

One of the most interesting books
I've read in years! This was written by James Fox, grandson of Phyllis
Langhorne Brand, who had access to sources that most biographers can only dream
of.
The LANGHORNE sisters were Southern beauties whose influence
spanned an ocean. Lizzie was one of the most celebrated belles of her day.
Irene married Charles Dana GIBSON and was a model for "The Gibson
Girl." Nancy would marry Waldorf ASTOR and became the first female member
of the British Parliament. Phyllis (the author's grandmother) married the
British economist Bob Brand. Nora, the baby, led a dreamy, scatterbrained life
that brought her family a good deal of worry. She was the mother of actress Joyce Grenfell. Lizzie, married to Moncure Perkins, would be the mother of influential interior designer Nancy Lancaster (of Colfax & Fowler fame).
I really enjoyed the detailed
descriptions of Virginia life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I became familiar with the social ritual of going
to "The Springs," the rough and tumble of rural Virginia politics, and
many other traditions that would mostly die out by the mid 20th century.
It's a terrific read!

"When John Lewis 'slew
the Irish lord' and fled to America in 1729, he established a prominent
family which has maintained its identity for more than two and a half
centuries. His sons Thomas, Gen. Andrew, William and Col. Charles, raised in
Virginia's Shenandoah Valley near Staunton, had important roles in American
Revolutionary times. This book records more than 9,200 descendants, with
some biographical information on more prominent ones. It also sorts out
conflicting stories and myths in perhaps the most balanced presentation of
the many published through the years about John Lewis and his family."

POLK's Folly: An American Family History
This is a wonderful book!
Every genealogist will appreciate Mr. Polk's family story, and every Southern
genealogist will recognize familiar themes.
"While just a young boy growing up in Texas, still
playing cowboys and Indians in what was once Comanche country, William R. Polk
listened excitedly to stories from his aging grandmother "Molly"
Harding Polk. Molly was a child, and later bride, of the American Civil War, and
had grown up listening to stories from her grandfather, born during the
Revolutionary War. 'So, in just two memories,' William R. relates, 'I had laid out for me tales of the entire history of the United
States.'
"This upbringing gave Polk a start in understanding both
his country's history and that of his family--which, as it turns out, lays claim
to more than a few noteworthy Americans. Later a teacher at Harvard and history
professor at the University of Chicago (not to mention a state department vet
under both Johnson and Kennedy, making William R. a formidable American in his
own right), Polk turned his professional scrutiny to studying this remarkable
lineage, which includes comrades-in-arms of George Washington, more than a few
plucky frontiersmen (one who was accused of shooting the sheriff of Laredo--in
self-defense, of course), a four-star general who was a brilliant WWII tank
commander under Patton, a feisty lawyer who defended Martin Luther King, and
America's tireless 11th president, James Knox Polk.
"Using these lives and the intimate stories surrounding
them, Polk traces the story of our country in a meaningful, personal, and
coherent way, "hang[ing] my tale of American history on a sort of
'backbone,' composed of my family.' "
