Wow! I can't believe it's been so long since I've managed
to get the newsletter out! Well, it's been eventful around here, as always,
including a biopsy (benign, thankfully - ladies, get those screening
mammograms!), among other things.
I also lost a dear aunt, Virginia Lou Allen Scott of San
Angelo, Texas, whom I will very much miss. I will be forever grateful
to her for providing me with most of the source material I have on my dad's
side of the family, and for her wonderful encouragement and wisdom.
The amazing self-dirtying house has finally been fixed. I
learned that - due to the inept installation of our original central air
conditioning system - the AC and heating unit has been operating in such a way
as to put the house into a "negative" pressure. As I had long ranted and
raved, though no on would listen to me (boy, was it making me NUTS!), my
house was literally sucking in dirt from outside! Through every one of its
many 1927-era gaps, cracks, and "pores!" No wonder I killed a computer a year!
Such adventures!
Message Boards!
I would like to announce the new
Message Boards, and I hope you'll stop by to say "hello" soon. I am
red-faced over my inability to keep up with my email, much less my site &
newsletter, but perhaps the message boards will be a great place to post your
"Connections," your queries, to help others, or just to say "Howdy!" Be sure
and link from your post to any news story on this site that you might be
referring to in your post. If you have extra information about a story, please
post it there! We'd all love to know!
I had to pay (ka-CHING) to get these boards, and hopefully
they'll work out well, but if there are problems I may move over to Yahoo's
Groups. Personally, I still need to read through their Java Help page
before I make up my mind.
Post a note and let me know what you think - do you like
traditional message boards like the new one we have here, or do you like Yahoo
Groups? Hint: whatever it is has to take the least amount of time to
manage and have the EASIEST learning curve for ME!
I can't believe how many people have signed up for this
newsletter since it was last published - wow! It's taken me most of
this evening just to update the mailing list, which I do by hand. I'm just
amazed that so many folks like this old stuff as much as I do.
I wish I could just have a big BBQ and invite everyone on
the list! Wouldn't that be fun? Unless I had to do the dishes.
Disclaimer: if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm not
a computer expert. I appreciate your boundless patience with my amateur
efforts here!
With luck I'll be on a more even production schedule around
here soon, but... let's keep our fingers crossed! Besides, it's deer season
here in Texas and I have a freezer to fill.
Now, since this delayed newsletter so already sooooo long,
I'll quit the chatter and get this unwieldy thing online.
For those of you who are new subscribers, this portion of TheOldenTimes.com is
not indexed by the
FreeFind search engine's spider, so you have the advantage of the updates
and the index of locations only if you're a subscriber.
For whatever that's worth.
Hey - at least it's free!
Many, Many Thanks!
Thanks again for all of your support! I deeply
appreciate all of your kind emails - without those I would run out of steam much
sooner!
Favorites
I have some favorite old newspaper stories and ads, and I began
keeping a list of them, which I've decided to post to the website. As I've
noted at the beginning of this
list list of favorites, there are a number of reasons for which I might choose and article
or an ad to list, ranging from "it's a great clue," and "what a
weird tale," to the fact that it struck me as just plain funny!
Do you have a particular favorite news story or ad on
TheOldenTimes.com?
Is it because you found a family name? Or because you
think it's the oddest thing your ancestors' peers ever did? Or because it
sounds just like something your goofy Uncle Ed did once? Did it tickle your
funnybone or tug at your heartstrings? If you'd like for me to add it to the
list, please email me at favorites@theoldentimes.com
with the url of your personal favorite and a brief explanation of why you like
it.
The
Bookstore has loads of new selections in just about every area, so if you
haven't stopped by there yet, remember that Christmas is coming soon! Some of
the merchants, like Alibris, have one-of-a-kind items that may not be
available by the time you see it. I try to keep the links current, but if you
click on a link to that long-lost book and they don't have it, I'm so
sorry! I hate it when that happens!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Your purchases
from the sponsors help me to defray my costs, which is deeply appreciated. And
very much needed, I might add!
Please stay safe, and remember those glorious words, e
pluribus unum.
Out of many, one.
As always, thanks for your patience, and thanks for
visiting.
Barbara
