If you haven't yet heard, Ancestry.com has gotten wise and
is now offering a Historic Newspaper Collection database! I can promise you
that their technological service is much spiffier than mine, and they
already have thousands of entire pages online. They can also afford to acquire
considerably more material and they actually have people working for them. As
most of you already know, I do this from my dining table, in between more
pressing family duties! And I'm gonna go broke buying these papers... but I
just love 'em! It's a horrible vice.
At this time their principal publications are from New
York, Indiana and Nevada, but I expect they'll quickly be adding many more
regions to their database. That's another plus for their service: since
they've got an entire company behind their website (versus one tired mom with
a houseful of original antique newspapers), they'll be adding thousands of
pages daily.
The only thing I have 'em beat on is my price!
TheOldenTimes.com is always FREE! ;-)
I encourage you to take a look, especially if you've got
New York, Indiana or Nevada roots.

Let me know what you think of their new service.
If you're a fan of historic newspapers, I have a link you
ought to visit: The American
Newspaper Repository. Nicholson Baker, author of Double Fold,
has established this Repository in order to preserve the original issues of
newspapers that would have otherwise been destroyed. I believe that they're
doing some mighty important work there by preserving these wonderful
collections, and if you've ever compared the the quality of 100-year-old
microfilmed newspapers versus the real thing, you'll understand exactly what I
mean.
Double Fold : Libraries and the
Assault on Paper is an intriguing but very disturbing
book.
WARNING: do not read it if you love
history and are also a pack rat! You will become exponentially more likely to
hoard books, newspapers, magazines, etc., etc., etc. Just ask my husband! It
also made me lay awake at night...
Many thanks to They
Live Again for the honor of their Genealogy Excellence Award!
I finally took the plunge... I bought a digital
camera! It's a Kodak DX3700 EasyShare Digital Camera,
and I'll soon post some of the pictures I'll be taking and I'll let you know
how I like it. Or if I don't like it! Thus far I haven't had the time
to fool with it.
For those of you who are new subscribers, this portion of The Olden Times is not indexed by the
FreeFind search engine's spider, so you have the advantage of the updates
and the bimonthly index of locations only if you're a subscriber.
See this
page for the back issues of this newsletter.
For whatever that's worth. Hey - at least it's free!
Folks are making connections!
I can't tell you how thrilled I am when someone finds a
familiar name here on The Olden Times! I've begun adding a few of the
interesting emails that I receive about this site and the old stories.
There isn't a link yet from the main part of the
site, but you can see the beginning of this new section on the Connections
pages.
I have so many more Connections stories to add, and
I wish I could get caught up, but...
I'm still behind, as always, in getting everything online,
but I'll keep working at it, so if you don't see something that you've sent to
me, please be patient with me and keep watching...
Thank you so much to all of you who have supported this
website, whether you have purchased a genealogy CD from Genealogy.com,
printer
ink from All-Ink.com,
holiday gifts from Amazon.com, or simply sent me a supportive email.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Don't forget, the Bookstore
is now open, and I try to add new titles, CDs or really neat gifts on a
regular basis. There is
also a terrific selection of discount
printer supplies and inkjet refill kits, so please remember The Olden
Times when the printer runs dry!
Well, I know I'm forgetting something, but if I wait until
i remember it, I'll never get this newsletter out! So, incompletely yours...
Please stay safe, and remember those glorious words, e
pluribus unum.
Out of many, one.
As always, thanks for your patience, and thanks for
visiting.
