Hearthstones: The Story of Historic Rutherford County Homes

A Glimpse of News Past
"In her attic Rita Frost Lynch found rare, intact copies of the Courier, Murfreesboro's first newspaper, from the years 1830-1832.
Stories, business notices, advertisements, and news items offer rare insight into not only Rutherford County in the early 1830s, but also the world. Articles vary from an entertaining account of a young sleep walker to an involved discussion of the present disturbances in Europe. Ads and essays give a firsthand look at the social culture of the age with classifieds reporting runaway slaves and letters reminding women of their secondary status.

"As both a historian and a member of the community about which she writes, Selma S. Lewis narrates the life of Jews in Memphis from the antebellum period through the civil rights movements of the 1960s. She poignantly describes the origins and development of a healthy relationship between her "biblical people" and the people of the Bible Belt. The result is an important work of Jewish, American, and Southern religious history."

Historic Sullivan County, Tennessee, With Brief Biographies of the Makers of History icon
"Oliver Taylor's book (just as he wrote it) remains the single most important work on the history of Sullivan County, Tennessee. This reprint has the added value of a name index.

"The first nineteen chapters deal with early activities in the Holston Valley, starting with the Cherokee settlements. Taylor records the history of the area with a sympathetic account of the Cherokee's plight. At the same time he tells of the brave frontier men and women and their constant battles with the Indians, recording the hardship of early citizens such as John Donelson and those who made the perilous river voyage with him. He tells of Isaac Shelby and the Wataugans, as they tried to subdue the Holston Valley wilderness, and the unconquerable spirit of those who attempted to start the State of Franklin. His admirations for East Tennessee's early pioneers is evident, and he has scattered biographies of the Sullivan County "Makers of History" throughout the book.

"Included in the latter half of this volume are chapters devoted to early industry, the church, agriculture, methods of travel and message transmission (including early post offices), the newspaper and politics, and some interesting "Odds and Ends."
