Note: Mr. SOUTHALL may have been referring to the recently deceased Hugh Swinton LEGARE, who had died in Boston the previous month. According to Biographies of Notable Americans, 1904 , LEGARE had been a lawyer, a statesman, author and journalist.
LEGARE was born at Charleston, South Carolina on January 2, 1797. He represented South Carolina in congress from 1837 to 1839, and he was appointed Attorney-General and acting Secretary of State of the United States in 1841. He died in Boston, MA on June 20, 1843.Back to Old Virginia News
