Deed of Gift The Slave Nathan from Sarah MAY to Thomas MAY
Rockingham County, North Carolina Book H, pp 149-150 Aril 2, 1789 Rockingham County [North Carolina] To all Christian people to whom this present writing shall come. I Sarah May of the State and County aforesaid send greeting: know ye that I the said Sarah May for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which I have to and bear towards my son Thomas May of the County of Buckingham of the Commonwealth of Virginia have given granted and by these presents do freely give clearly and absolutely give and grant to the said Thomas May his heirs executors etc., a certain negroe boy of the name of Nathan or his legal representative this negro boy only being lent to me by [my] father in his lifetime. To have and to hold the said negro boy Nathan to him the said Thomas May his heirs or assigns forever, to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Thomas May. In witness whereof I have set my hand and fixed my seal to this second day of April in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine. Signed sealed and delivered in Presence of George Peay, Sr., John May, John Peay State of North Carolina Rockingham County February Term 1803: This certifies that the within Deed from Sarah May to her son Thomas May, proved by the oaths of George Peay esq. and John May and on motion be ordered be registered.
