Maine's Coastal Cemeteries: A Historic Tour

"'It is a well-kept secret that people love cemeteries,' says author Karen Batignani, 'and the interest in them is growing rapidly.' In this guidebook, she presents thirty-five of Maine's most beautiful, historic, and interesting coastal cemeteries, each described in a lively and informative way. Descriptions include their locations, as well as information about unusual epitaphs, notable carvings, historically relevant details, folklore, and stories about well-known stonecutters, prominent people, and war veterans. She also delves into a brief history of New England graveyards, changes in headstone styles through time, and how those changes reflect changing cultural attitudes toward death. She even includes advice on graveyard etiquette and photography tips. This guide will appeal to anyone interested in graveyards, graveyard art and photography, and history--as well as those who want to discover more beautiful Maine places to visit."

Maine Cemeteries
"Genealogical researchers of Maine families will want to add this volume to their library. This volume concentrates on the historical cemeteries of Falmouth and Yarmouth and is comprised of over eleven thousand names. Although the majority of the readings are dated from the eighteen and nineteen hundreds this volume includes two cemeteries that date from the 1700s.Readings are grouped by cemetery including Blanchard, McGregor, Pine Grove, Merrill, Moss Side, Yarmouth Historical, Holy Cross, Riverside, and the Pioneer Burial Ground of Yarmouth. Surname headings for each cemetery are listed alphabetically with individual entries alphabetized under each heading. Entries include (as available) given name, birth date and death date. Relationship information such as spouse or sibling has been listed whenever possible."

HAMILTONS of Waterborough, York County, Maine: Their Ancestors and Descendants
"David Hamilton, a Scottish prisoner who was transported to
Charlestown, MA in 1651, soon settled in Dover, NH. His ancestry and descendants
are detailed here, with emphasis on five Hamilton brothers, great-grandsons of
David, who moved from Berwick, ME to Waterboro, ME in the 18th century. The
standard Register format is used and documentation, particularly for the 17th
and 18th centuries, is good. Because of the extensive records of Waterboro, ME
which Mr. Hamilton included in his book, and the loss of much of Waterboro's
records in major fires in 1911 and 1947, his book is often the only source for
the existence, location, and description of early landmarks. Excellent for
Hamilton descendants and students of the towns of Dover and Rollinsford, NH and
the Maine towns of Waterboro, Saco, Berwick and South Berwick."

Selected Maine Coast Postcards of George S. Graves (Postcard History Series)

Original 1884 Hand-Colored Map: City of Portland and Vicinity, Cumberland Co., Maine
From the seller: "This beautiful, original hand-colored map came from "Atlas of the State of Maine" produced by George N. Colby & Co. in 1884. This atlas and the maps therein were produced in limited numbers for a short time, making city and county maps of Maine difficult to locate. This map features the City of Portland in the County of Cumberland. Detailed steel plate engraving shows all roads (which are named), railroads, buildings and the business within, wards and or districts, schools, churches, hospitals, jails, cemeteries, parks, wharfs, ship yards, mills, court house, halls and major manufacturing plants. A fantastic map if you live in the area or know someone who does. MAKER: George N. Colby & Company; CONDITION: Very Good; SIZE: 24" x 16"; Year:1884."
Bygone Coastal Maine: A Postcard Tour from Kittery to Camden

"This is the third in Earl Brechlin's series of small books featuring color reproductions of antique postcards. Captions opposite each historic card describe the images, most of which date from 1900 to 1930. The postcards document a variety of interesting locations, including Old Orchard Beach, Portland, Pemaquid, Wiscasset, and several lighthouses."

A Day's Work: A Sampler of
Historic Maine Photographs, 1860--1920, Part II "These extraordinary collections of
photographs and narrative captions have wide appeal to anyone interested in
Maine's past. Spend an afternoon with either volume of A Day's Work, and
you'll make discoveries that will change how you look at Maine's passing scene.
Bunting has a knack for spotting the unusual in a photograph, or some minor
detail that, in fact, tells a major story about the how and why. From granite
quarry operations to an itinerant cobbler in a sailing scow to hootchie cootchie
dancers at the state fair to deepwater ships, his page-long captions place these
images in social and economic context—but this is not dry history. His
research has uncovered a wealth of fascinating, often quirky detail (did you
know that mummy wrappings were imported from Egypt for Maine papermaking?), and
he makes frequent forays into the Maine storytelling tradition."
