Five Sisters: The Langhorne Sisters of Virginia

by James Fox. The story of the five Langhorne
sisters, Southern beauties who wielded a powerful influence in politics and
culture during the tumultuous years from the turn of the 20th century through
the Second World War.
Lizzie was a famous Richmond belle and the mother of
celebrated decorator Nancy Lancaster. Irene married Charles Dana Gibson
and served as the model for that all-American icon, the Gibson girl. Nora,
dreamy and artistic, had a turbulent life scattered with lovers including,
perhaps, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nancy entered English society through second
husband Waldorf Astor and focused her formidable energies on politics as the
first female member of Parliament. Phyllis married the brilliant English
economist Bob Brand.
The author is a grandson of Phyllis Langhorne Brand and had
access to many of the sisters' letters. This is a lively portrait of a family
with its roots deep in Virginia but with influence that reached across the
Atlantic.
I enjoyed this book immensely, and found the descriptions of
late 19th-century life in Virginia to be fascinating and well-informed. I think
you'll enjoy it, too!
