Richard Oscar DOWDY was the son
of William Preston DOWDY and Lucy E. MAY. He was born in Fayette County,
Tennessee about 1848. I don't yet know when he migrated to Louisiana, but
he married there in 1882. A transcript of an old family letter indicates
that "Uncle Oscar," as his niece called him, had "died and
left two children," though she did not know their names.
He married Cecile M. CHAZE in
Avoyelles Parish in 1882. They were married by a Catholic priest, implying
that Richard had converted to Catholicism at some point. The DOWDY family
was either Methodist or Presbyterian, and this would have been a
significant change in religious affiliation for the nineteenth
century.
I hope that I'll eventually be
able to learn what happened to Richard Oscar DOWDY and Cecile CHAZE, as
well as the names of their children.
