Heritage of Greene County, Alabama
Original!
A Directory of Greene County for 1855-56; Embracing the Names of Voters in the County Generally, Alphabetically Arranged, Their Occupation, Residence, and Post Office; Numerous Tables of County Statistics, a Short Sketch of the Early Settlement of the County; Advertisements, Etc.
From the seller: "Printed by Strickland & Co., 1856., Mobile, (AL): First edition, and decidedly rare in this condition. Howes S-736 calls for a map, with the note "not issued in all copies," it was actually issued separately. Sabin 85375a: "Map of the county intended to accompany the directory issued separately." Spear, p. 138 (not mentioning a map). Owen BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ALABAMA, p. 1167: "The whole work abounds in detail, and possesses an interest that does not usually attach to such an effort" (Owen describes the map separately, in the section with other maps). OCLC locates ten copies, with five outside Alabama. Ante-bellum southern directories are seldom encountered in trade. 12mo. 74 pp., plus 25 pages of ads. Original black cloth, printed paper label on upper boards; poor quality paper browned, but a fine copy for this book."
